Naturopathy: 6 principles

Welcome to the world of natural health! If you’re seeking to learn a little more about what naturopathy is then you’ve come to the right place.

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to health that looks at healing the individual rather than symptoms or the disease itself. It is believed that the body has a tremendous capability of healing but sometimes just needs a little help and push in the right direction. When we discover the root cause for poor health, that is when we can make the most impactful, longterm and sustainable changes.

The pillars that support naturopathy and its school of thought are based on 6 fundamental principles which encompass the values that we as naturopaths conduct our practice by. They are as follows:

  1. Primum non nocere (first do no harm)

  2. Vis medicatrix naturae (the healing power of nature)

  3. Tolle causam (treat the cause)

  4. Tolle totum (treat the whole person)

  5. Docere (doctor as teacher)

  6. Praevenic (prevention)

How great do they sound! Each one speaks to itself and makes so much sense when it comes to the basics of good health. To rely on the healing power of nature in not just our body’s innate abilities, but also in optimising our environments, our lifestyle and the foods we consume, and in doing so finding the cause in order to treat the whole person.

I have utmost respect for conventional medicine and all of its life-saving achievements that it has brought us. Though I feel that there are definitely some aspects that are missing when it comes to wellbeing that we as naturopaths can fill.

After all, good health is to have complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease.
